This Wednesday,  Senior Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics Education, Tasos Barkatsas will host the next session of the Research Brown Bag Seminar presenting:  Investigating Mathematics Students’ Motivational Beliefs.

The purpose of this study was to explore the factorial structure of motivation and perception items from a student survey utilised as part of the Reframing Mathematical Futures II (RMFII) Project. Data was collected in 2017 from 442 students in Years 7 to 10 from various different States across Australia. An exploratory factor analysis identified four factors which were consistent with the studies the items were adapted from: Intrinsic and Cognitive Value of Mathematics, Instrumental Value of Mathematics, Mathematics Effort, and Social Impact of School Mathematics. A Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) test also revealed that there were statistically significant differences between Year Levels and States for some of these factors.

Tasos is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics Education and a Quantitative Data Analyst and has published more than 90 research papers, chapters and books (23 in languages other than English). Dr Barkatsas was the foundation Program Manager of the RMIT University Master of Teaching Practice Programs (Primary and Secondary). He was a Mathematics, Physics, IT and Science teacher and Head of Mathematics and Science in Victorian schools for fifteen years and he has been an academic at Melbourne, Monash and RMIT Universities. 

Tasos is the also Series Editor of the Sense Publishers Series: ‘Global Education in the 21st Century’, an Editorial Board member in a number of international research journals, a quantitative data analyst in three research projects, a Canadian Research Council Grants Assessor and a reviewer in numerous international research journals and conferences and is currently co-editing two books, which will be published in his book series.
